KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk James Ratib said the long-standing shortage of teachers in Chinese national-type schools (SJKC) requires urgent and serious action.

He said the shortage is affecting teaching quality and daily school operations, stressing the need to strengthen placement of locally trained teachers so Sabah-trained educators can continue serving in the state.

The statement followed a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Sabah Chinese School Boards Association (Dong Lian) on Tuesday, which submitted an education memorandum detailing challenges faced by SJKCs, particularly the lack of teachers.

Dong Lian chairman Datuk Ben Lim Kiat Kong said the visit aimed to directly raise the chronic shortage issue and expressed hope for stronger state support through policy and immediate practical measures.

Both sides emphasised continued cooperation to ensure inclusive and balanced education development in Sabah.
