Kota Kinabalu: There is a need to establish another international airport in Sabah in addition to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) which is currently the second busiest airport in Malaysia.
In making the call, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said a second international airport was needed to accommodate the high volume of international tourist arrivals to Sabah through KKIA.
“I also want to ask, what is the Transport Ministry’s strategic plan to improve and upgrade the Sandakan and Tawau airports to international airports?” he said in the Ministry-level budget debate at the Dewan Rakyat.
Earlier, Dr Jeffrey who is also Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, had asked the International Trade and Industry Ministry to hold a massive investment and trade promotion exhibition in Kota Kinabalu.
Dr Jeffrey said Sabah is now receiving many investment proposals from China, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan.
“Investment promotions are made so that potential investors can see the investment situation in Sabah ‘first-hand’ to help them make investment decisions,” he said.
