TENOM: Efforts to improve breastfeeding practices in Sabah must focus on building strong support systems to enable mothers to continue, rather than merely encouraging them, said Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Julita Majungki.
Officiating the State-Level World Breastfeeding Week Celebration and the 2026 Sabah Breastfeeding Support Group Members (Akssi) Convention here on Thursday, Julita noted that mothers still face significant hurdles, including work commitments and family responsibilities.
She emphasised that breastfeeding goes beyond basic nutrition by supporting children’s health, contributing to human capital development, and securing the State's future wellbeing.
Julita stressed that Sabah's true progress should be measured by the quality of the generation nurtured from birth, rather than solely by physical or economic indicators.
State Health director Datuk Dr William Gotulis, Tenom assistant district officer Zulasri Pitting, Tenom deputy district police chief DSP Samsualan Sam, and Akssi chairperson Aidah John also attended the event.
