Kota Kinabalu: The National Union of Sabah Port Companies Employees (KKPPSSPS) expressed strong support for the implementation of the Non-Occupational Accident Scheme, also known as the 24-Hour Protection Scheme (Skim Lindung 24 Jam), describing it as an important step towards strengthening social protection and the welfare of workers in the country.
Its President Mohd Airy Arin said protection for workers should not end when working hours are over, as the risk of accidents could arise anytime and anywhere.
He said the additional 0.75 per cent contribution should be viewed as an investment in the future of workers and their families, rather than as an increase in contribution costs.
“KKPPSSPS believes that worker protection must take into account the realities of daily life. Workers face risks not only at the workplace but are also exposed to various risks after working hours.
“Therefore, the 24-Hour Protection Scheme provides more comprehensive protection while also helping to reduce the financial burden on workers and their families when misfortune strikes,” he said.
Mohd Airy said an accident could have a major impact on workers, particularly those who were the main breadwinners of their families, affecting their income, daily needs and their families’ future.
He said the situation would become even more challenging if a worker suffered injuries or lost the ability to work due to an accident outside working hours but did not receive adequate protection.
“We cannot talk only about worker productivity without ensuring that their welfare and protection are also prioritised. Workers are an important asset to the country and they deserve an appropriate social protection safety net,” he stressed.
Mohd Airy said the additional 0.75 per cent contribution should be assessed based on the value of the protection received in the long term.
“When compared with the risks and potential financial burden that workers and their families would have to bear in the event of an accident, this additional contribution is reasonable.
“What we prioritise is the protection and well-being of workers and their families. We do not want a family to lose its source of income while at the same time having to shoulder a huge financial burden simply because an accident occurred outside working hour.
“The trade union will continue to play its role in ensuring that the interests and welfare of workers are not overlooked.
“We are prepared to work with the relevant parties to ensure that the implementation of the 24-Hour Protection Scheme truly benefits workers,” he said.
