Sabah reaffirms commitment to Chinese education

SANDAKAN: The Sabah Government remains committed to strengthening education infrastructure, particularly for national-type Chinese schools (SJKC), said Technical Advisor (Energy) to the Chief Minister, Datuk Jim Lim.

Speaking at a visit to the Sun Bear Resource Centre of SJK(C) Tai Tong in Sandakan on Saturday, he said state funding for non-Muslim religious bodies, mission schools, Chinese independent schools and SJKCs increased from RM70 million in 2025 to RM90 million in 2026, while scholarships and support for Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) holders had also been expanded.

Jim said the Sabah Maju Jaya agenda reflects Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's commitment to ensuring no child is left behind through school assistance programmes, scholarships and targeted support for vernacular schools.

He also acknowledged SJK(C) Tai Tong's ageing infrastructure, including deteriorating buildings, rusted roofs, outdated electrical systems and wooden structures, and assured the school that its concerns would receive due attention as the Government works with the school board, Parent-Teacher Association and community.

The programme, organised by the school board, Parent-Teacher Association and alumni, was attended by representatives from the education sector, government agencies and the local community, with school leaders expressing hope for funding to carry out urgent repair works.
