SABAH’S economy remains resilient despite various challenges, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He said the State Government is doing its best to revive the economy through initiatives outlined in the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan.
According to him, Sabah has achieved several significant successes, including in 2021, where the State Government managed to collect RM5.449 billion in revenue which is the largest sum to date.
“There are many more achievements of the Government that will benefit the people of Sabah as a whole.
“In terms of developing the state, we still have a lot to do,” he said in a message in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha on July 10.
Last year, Sabah began a massive revamp of its 200-plus government-linked companies (GLCs) and statutory bodies in an effort to improve the state’s economy and uplift the living standards of its people.
After taking over as Chief Minister in 2020, Hajiji ordered an immediate review of agreements and contracts involving all state agencies and GLCs that are underperforming or making losses. He has also directed legal officers to scrutinise every line of the agreements that had been signed.
In June last year, Hajiji oversaw the reshuffle of the state Corporate Policy and Governance Monitoring Committee, a pivotal move to enhance the management, fiscal responsibility and operational effectiveness of Sabah’s GLCs.
On May 26, he gave an ultimatum to GLCs to pay at least RM1 million in dividends to the State Government beginning this year.
He has also given notice that he will come down hard on GLCs which are not performing or are underperforming.
In no uncertain terms, he has told GLC officials he does not want to see any deals that are not in the interest of the state. He has reminded those who sign agreements and contracts to ensure that they keep the interest of the state in mind at all times.
Meanwhile, Hajiji said Aidiladha, celebrated by Muslims around the world, observes the sacrifices made by prophet Ibrahim Alaihissalam and his son Ismail which impart vital lessons. Hajiji told Muslims in Sabah to use the teachings as a guide in facing various everyday challenges, especially in the economic aspect ever since the pandemic struck two years ago.
“Take every challenge and sacrifice we face in life as a foundation to rise up and foster the spirit of togetherness. Celebrate Aidiladha with family in moderation, maintain self-control with regards to the ongoing health protocols.
“To the Sabah Haj pilgrims, we pray all their affairs be simplified in perfecting the fifth pillar of Islam. And for those who are performing sacrificial rituals, fulfil your responsibilities in sincerity and reverence. Distribute the sacrificial meat to those in need. Hopefully the value of unity among the people of Sabah can be strengthened through worship,” he said.
