Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Para swimmer Abd Halim Mohammad set a new Asian record at the Citi Para Swimming World Series held in Ligano Sabbiadoro, Italy last month.

He rewrote the old record of 34.87 seconds held by a Chinese athlete with his new time of 34.77 seconds in the 50-metre breaststroke event.

He also qualified for the Asian Para Games to be held in Hangzhou in October, while fellow teammate Ethan Khoo who also competed at the Citi Para Swimming World Series made it to Hangzhou as well.

The duo together with Brenda Larry and Jaflee Jikol will next be taking part in the Para Swimming World series in Singapore from April 29-May 1 followed by the Asean Para Games in Cambodia from June 3-10.

The four athletes will also be participating in the World Para Swimming Championship to be held in Manchester, England from July 31-August 6.

Pestron (Sabah Sports and Recreation Association for People with Disabilities) president Tan Hwa Koon was delighted with the latest achievement from the athletes.

“We are very happy that our athletes continue to do well in the international scene under the guidance of coach Eva Wong.

“I hope they can keep their momentum and train even harder for the forthcoming World Para Swimming Championships in Manchester,” he said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Eva expressed her gratitude to the management of Malaysia Sabah Sports School and Penampang Sports Complex for the facilities provided while waiting for the completion of renovation works at the Likas Aquatic Centre.
