Sabah’s water woes take centre stage

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s ageing water pipelines, non-revenue water (NRW) and sustainable infrastructure management were among the key issues discussed during a meeting between Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the Sabah Plumber Association (SPA) and Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Joachim Gunsalam.

The delegation, represented by UMS academic Prof Dr Jidon Janaun and SPA president Dr Carmen Wong, exchanged views with Joachim on water security, ageing distribution networks, infrastructure maintenance and the potential of emerging technologies to improve water management across the State.

The discussion highlighted the need to address not only water production capacity but also distribution network conditions, water pressure management, infrastructure reliability and long-term maintenance.

Artificial intelligence (AI), intelligent monitoring systems and data-driven infrastructure management were discussed as potential tools to improve distribution efficiency and detect leaks.

Wong also shared insights from SPA’s recent technical study visit to China, where the delegation explored advances in smart water management, pipeline technologies and digital monitoring systems.

The meeting highlighted the importance of reliable data, appropriate sensor placement and technical expertise to ensure these technologies could be effectively applied to practical water infrastructure challenges.

The UMS-SPA collaboration aims to combine academic research and technical knowledge with industry experience, encouraging knowledge exchange and exploring innovations relevant to Sabah’s water sector.

The initiative focuses on three interconnected areas: water supply and security, wastewater and sewerage management, and drainage and flood management. These are closely linked to public health, environmental protection, urban resilience and long-term development.

UMS and SPA said stronger collaboration among academia, government agencies and industry professionals could encourage a more comprehensive approach to infrastructure planning, technical competency and sustainable management.

The discussion also covered professional training, technology transfer, research collaboration and greater public awareness of water-related challenges.

During the meeting, the delegation briefed Joachim on preparations for World Plumbing Day Sabah 2027, scheduled for April 8 to 11.

Jointly organised by UMS and SPA, the four-day programme aims to bring together government agencies, universities, international professional organisations, industry leaders, technical specialists and the wider community.

Activities will include leadership forums, technical seminars, innovation competitions, industry showcases, community engagement activities and the Sabah Water Run.
