Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah women’s football team opened their campaign in the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma) with a 1-2 loss to hosts Selangor at the Selayang Stadium on Thursday night.
Team manager Djoehan Darno said after the game that it was a hard-fought battle and attributed the narrow loss to jitteriness among players.
He explained that nerves stemming from playing in front of home fans affected their performance, despite controlling the match.
“Selangor is a strong team. We had several chances but couldn’t convert them into goals. The first goal for them was a mistake on our part,” he said.
He said the team is now turning their focus on winning the next match against the Federal Territory (KL), stating that their goal is to secure a place in the semi-finals.
“Our target is winning the gold medal and with only three teams in Group A, a win is crucial and our players are determined to give their best in the next game,” he added.
Earlier in the day, the men’s team defeated Sarawak in their second Group A tie at the UKM Stadium in Bangi.
Despite the win, coach Faisal Ahmad said the players struggled due to exhaustion following their opening round 0-1 loss to Terengganu on Tuesday in the three-team group.
“It was challenging for our players because the limited rest between the first and second games clearly took its toll.
“I am immensely proud of the players for giving their best under the circumstances to secure the win.
“Mathematically, we have all but sealed our spot in the quarterfinals. Even if Sarawak defeats Terengganu 2-0 in their final group match, we will still advance to the knockout stage.
“The result of that match will only decide whether we finish first or second in the group to face the qualifiers from Group B,” he added.
