PENAMPANG: Sabah and Sarawak play a pivotal role in determining the formation of the Federal Government and the appointment of the Prime Minister, said United Kinabalu Progressive Organisation (Upko) president Datuk Ewon Benedick (pic).
Speaking after delivering his keynote address at the 17th Upko Triennial Delegates Conference at the KDCA Unity Centre Hall, Ewon stated that the existence of Malaysia is inseparable from both Borneo states, making them essential to the nation's governance.
He emphasised that the strength of Sabah and Sarawak should not be downplayed, noting that both regions act as kingmakers in shaping the federal leadership and deciding the future of the federation.
On preparations for the upcoming General Election, Ewon said Upko is strengthening its party structure and encouraging aspiring candidates to intensify ground work, while seat allocation will be negotiated within Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) at the appropriate time.
He added that Upko will present its stance to ensure the party is given the space to contest at least its two existing parliamentary seats, Tuaran and Penampang, leaving further discussions for internal talks with the Chief Minister and GRS partners.
