
Kota Kinabalu: State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe said Sabah is striving to become an industrialised State.
“Sabah’s GDP growth was 4.4 per cent last year, the highest in the nation,” he said during a recent meeting with Jilin Municipal Party Secretary Hu Bin in China.
Phoong spoke about Sabah’s strategic advantages, highlighting its geographical location in the centre of Asean and its status as home to the country’s second-largest international airport.
“Although Sabah is working towards becoming an industrialised State, there is still much to learn from Jilin,” he said.

According to him, Sabah and Jilin signed five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and he is confident that with the support of the Jilin government and businesses, Sabah will achieve greater progress.
Phoong said upon returning to Sabah, they plan to promote Jilin, encouraging more Sabahans to visit Jilin this winter.
He also looks forward to the possibility of tasting Sabah’s durians in Jilin soon and anticipates more opportunities for future cooperation.
Present were the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Datuk Thomas Logijin, Invest Sabah Berhad representatives (CEO Dr Firdaus Suffian and George Wong), members of the Sabah Economic Advisory Council, Datuk John Lo, Datuk Foo Ngee Kee, Sabah China Chamber of Commerce President Datuk Frankie Liew, Deputy President Brett Chua, Hon. Advisor Datuk Aloysius Tan, Vice President Datuk Jonathan Koh, Vice President cum Young Entrepreneurs Chairman Chiew Heng Hock, Director of Public Relations Datuk Simon Teoh, Director of Commercial Affairs Douglas Fong, Director of Information Technology and Information Ling Hang Tze and Director of Business Media Leo Liew.
Phoong’s other engagements included visits to the FAW Jiefang Intelligent (AI) Vehicle Plant and the FAW Jilin Automobile Factory, with the hope of attracting investment to establish factories in Sabah, thereby promoting the growth of industrialisation in the State.
