Kota Kinabalu: Sabah will play host to the premier international flagship technical conference of IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific Region) or IEEE TENCON 2025 from Oct 25 to 27 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is pronounced as Eye-Triple E). It is the world’s largest technical professional organisation dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.

There are over 486,000 IEEE members in over 190 countries, more than 67 per cent of whom are from outside the United States. IEEE members comprise engineers, scientists, and allied professionals whose technical interests are rooted in electrical and computer sciences, engineering, and related disciplines.

IEEE sponsors more than 2,000 annual conferences and events worldwide, curating cutting-edge content for all of the technical fields of interest within IEEE.

With the theme “Unleashing Innovation : Elevating Technologies to New Horizons”, TENCON 2025 is being organised by IEEE Malaysia Section in collaboration with IEEE Sabah Sub-Section, Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), Sabah Convention Bureau (SCB), SICC as well as Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said the organisers had made the right choice in determining the destination for this prestigious event.

She congratulated IEEE Malaysia Section on winning the bid for Sabah to host TENCON 2025.

“It is a great opportunity for first-timers to visit The Land Below the Wind with a myriad of offerings to cater to travellers’ different needs and tastes from Mt Kinabalu, a Unesco World Heritage Site, to the sea and islands (marine parks) as well as our world famous diving spots.

“For those interested in community-based tourism (CoBT), we can take them to tourism homestays outside the State capital for an authentic experience of rural life.

“As the gateway to Sabah’s ecotourism (apart from Kinabalu Park) and iconic wildlife, Sandakan beckons wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers,” Liew said after receiving a courtesy call by a delegation from IEEE Malaysia Section and Sabah Sub-Section, led by the Chairman of IEEE Malaysia Section, Bernard Lim, recently.

Also present were the Chairman of IEEE Sabah Sub-Section, UMS Associate Professor Ts Dr Kenneth Teo Tze Kin, and Associate Professor Ts Dr Ismail Saad.

The Minister urged Tech-savvy Malaysians in Sabah to avail themselves of the opportunity to participate in the Conference as it serves as a platform to exchange ideas, showcase achievements, and promote advances in electrical engineering, electronics, computer engineering, and information technology.

Liew assured the organisers that SCB, an agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS), will render the necessary assistance for smooth progress of preparations for TENCON 2025.

SCB Chief Executive Officer Noredah Othman said the Bureau was first introduced to the organiser at their 35th IEEE Malaysia Section AGM in January 2025.

“This is where we learnt that IEEE is the largest global association in the world with 500 thousand members embracing different disciplines. In Malaysia, there are about 3,000 members.

“SCB will support the event by providing advisory services and showcasing Sabah’s rich cultural heritage for the gala dinner to welcome the delegates,” she added.

In his briefing, Lim, who is based in Penang, said the Conference aims to gather a diverse group of participants, including researchers, educators, students, practitioners, technologists, and policymakers, from academia, government, industry, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), adding it will feature keynote speeches and invited talks by distinguished speakers, offering insights into emerging trends and cutting-edge innovations.

“We expect to attract over 500 international delegates besides local and domestic delegates. We also plan to invite over 200 university and school students.

“During TENCON 2025, apart from technical sessions, panel discussions, and exhibits highlighting current research and applications, various programs will be organised, for example, the display of Innovation Challenge Grand Finale, Energy Forum, Entrepreneurship Programme, Leadership Forum, Education Activities as well as Humanitarian Activities,” the Chairman of IEEE Malaysia Section said.

According to Lim, IEEE sponsors more than 2,000 annual conferences and events worldwide, curating cutting-edge content for all of the technical fields of interest within the Institute.
