Kota Kinabalu: Graduates of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes in Sabah have achieved an employability rate exceeding 95 per cent, reflecting their strong alignment with current job market demands.

Head of State Tun Musa Aman said the impressive statistic highlights the value of TVET in producing skilled and job-ready individuals.

“TVET graduates continue to show excellent performance with an employability rate above 95%. Apart from securing good jobs, many are also venturing into self-employment and creating new job opportunities through their acquired skills,” he said.

Tun Musa was speaking at the 29th Convocation Ceremony of Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic, held at Dewan Rafflesia, Wednesday.

He added that TVET equips students with practical skills crucial to industries, helping develop a competent workforce capable of driving technological innovation and boosting the economy.

Since its establishment 29 years ago, Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic has produced graduates who have filled critical roles across various sectors.

The recent establishment of the Sabah TVET Council on May 19 is expected to further enhance the technical training ecosystem and better prepare graduates for the evolving workforce.

“I believe the Polytechnic maintains strong partnerships with industry players and government agencies to keep its curriculum and training relevant,” he said, stressing that the institution plays a key role in supporting Sabah’s development through innovation and digitalisation.

A total of 1,263 graduates were celebrated over the two-day convocation, receiving diplomas and certificates in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, Commerce, as well as Tourism and Hospitality. The Polytechnic has now produced 29,391 graduates since its inception.

Special awards presented during the ceremony included Industry Award, Leadership Award, Academic and Co-curriculum Excellence Award, Director’s Award and Head of State’s Award.

The Head of State’s Award was presented to NurFaezah Ali @ Mohamad Ali, a Diploma in Wood-Based Technology graduate. She also received the Director’s Award for Session I (2023/2024), while Lee Zi Ling, a Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Computer) graduate, received the same award for Session II.

NurFaezah, who hails from Keningau and is now pursuing her Bachelor’s in Wood Industrial Technology at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), credited her success to her parents’ unwavering support.

“Be brave enough to step out of your comfort zone and never give up easily,” she said.

Also present were State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr. Mohd Ariffin Mohd Arif; Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Ruslan Muharam; Assistant Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy; Deputy Director-General (Planning), Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education Dr Shamsuri Abdullah and Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic Director Md Nor Abdul Halim.
