SANDAKAN: Umno Sabah has taken early steps to prepare for the general election should it be held ahead of schedule.
Umno Sabah Liaison Chairman Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the party is always prepared as part of the Unity Government, although the election date had yet to be determined.
He said preparations at the State level had already begun, including a meeting of the Umno Sabah to discuss the party’s preparations and election machinery.
“For now, we are part of the Unity Government and we have always been prepared.
“Last week, I called a meeting of the Umno Sabah to draw up our plans and preparations for the election,” he said, after officiating the Sepilok Jazz 2026 at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) in Sandakan on Saturday.
According to him, a preparation schedule had also been drawn up to ensure the party machinery remained on standby.
“I understand that there is already a schedule for us to be on standby. We do not know when it will be, but what is certain is that we have taken steps to prepare,” he said.
Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had proposed that the 16th General Election (GE16) be held earlier.
