KOTA KINABALU: The State Government welcomed Singapore’s decision to open a consulate in Kota Kinabalu this year, calling it a strategic move to strengthen economic, trade, investment and security cooperation between Sabah and Singapore.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the consulate would expand cooperation, attract more investment and trade, and encourage more Singaporean tourists to visit Sabah.

He said this after a courtesy call by Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vanu Gopala Menon, at Menara Kinabalu on Friday.

Menon confirmed that Singapore will open consulates in Sabah and Sarawak following approval from the Malaysian Government last month, a move earlier welcomed by Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong as strengthening bilateral relations.
