Kota Kinabalu: Team manager Mohd Khairul Nizaem Moktar is confident Sabah football team will get past their group stage with ease in the coming Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Kuala Lumpur.
Sabah are drawn in Group C with Terengganu and Kelantan and the opening match is against Terengganu on September 13 at the UKM Stadium followed by the latter at the same venue on September 17.
Khairul believes the team are in good shape under the guidance of head coach Adzrien Harun and his assistant Sudirman Garamah over the past few weeks.
“I believe we are ready to face the challenge after the good job done by our coach Adzrien and his assistant Sudirman including the series of friendly matches they had recently.
“Although it is not a difficult group for us and we are expected to progress, the team must be very careful and not be too confident because our ultimate target is to reach the final and win the gold medal, ” he said.
Meanwhile, the team with 23 players and seven officials had left for the national capital on September 1.
They are scheduled to hold three friendly matches while there, starting with KL Rovers on September 6 followed by the National Assessment Institute (Inspen) on September 8 and another team before the actual competition begins.
