Kota Kinabalu: Head coach Bobby Gonzales (pic) is eyeing a double as the Sabah Football Association (Safa) women’s team takes on Selangor FC in tonight’s (Saturday) National Women’s League clash at Stadium MPAJ in Ampang.
He is confident his team is ready for the challenge, buoyed by their 3-1 victory over the rivals at Penampang Stadium late last monthThe two teams currently occupy the top two spots in the league. Selangor leads the pack with 18 points, while Safa sits just two points adrift with a game in hand.
“This won’t be easy as we are playing on a synthetic pitch against a top team, but I have complete confidence in my players. If they play to their full potential, I am confident we can reach our target, or at least secure a point,” he said on Friday.
He also urged his players to be more clinical in front of goal, having squandered several clear-cut chances despite their 6-0 thrashing of the Young Tigress at the MPSJ Stadium in Subang Jaya on Tuesday.
The team started strong with Jaciah Jumilis opening the scoring in the 10th minute. However, missed opportunities meant they only had Enzi Hekima Starks’ 30th-minute strike to show for the rest of the first half.
After a sluggish start to the second period, Enzi exploded with a rapid four-minute hat-trick (74’, 77’, 78’) before Henrietta Justin capped off the rout in the 87th minute.
“Although we won the match, the statistics show we should have scored more. We played exceptionally well and dominated every area of the game. However, we must sharpen our attack.
“Despite creating numerous chances, we simply lacked the final product to convert them into goals,” said Bobby.
