SANDAKAN: The upcoming upgrading of the Sandakan Airport terminal is timely and crucial as the local tourism industry steps up preparations for the Visit Sabah Year 2027 campaign, said Sandakan Tourism Association (Stan) President Teo Chee Kim.
He said the terminal upgrading would enhance the overall arrival experience for visitors and strengthen Sandakan’s position as an important gateway for tourism in eastern Sabah.
The upgrading plans were disclosed by the newly appointed Sandakan Airport manager, Muhammad Irfan Mohd Noor, during a recent working visit by Stan to the airport.
Muhammad Irfan assumed his position as Sandakan Airport manager in mid-August this year. Also present during the meeting were Stan treasurer Cindy Loo, deputy secretary Catina Chia, and committee members Dr. Lydia Vun and Anton Ngui.
According to Muhammad Irfan, the proposed upgrading works will include the installation of two additional passenger boarding bridges, reconfiguration of the existing departure and arrival halls, upgrading of the terminal’s air-conditioning system, and installation of e-gates at the immigration counters, among other improvements.
The upgrading works are expected to commence early next year.
Teo said the improvements would be welcomed by tourism operators and visitors, particularly with Sandakan serving as a key gateway for thousands of tourists each year.
“The Sandakan Airport is an important point of entry for thousands of tourists every year. We can look forward to a more spacious and comfortable terminal once the upgrading project is completed.
“This is important as the current facilities do not always meet public expectations, particularly during peak periods,” he said.
Stanand Malaysia Airports also acknowledged the importance of closer collaboration between the two parties in supporting the growth of Sandakan’s tourism industry.
Teo said the airport plays a vital role in enhancing air connectivity and supporting the growth of the local tourism sector, particularly as Sabah prepares for Visit Sabah Year 2027.
Among the matters discussed during the meeting were potential collaboration to enhance air connectivity, improvements to tour bus parking arrangement, better passenger flow within the terminal, and enhanced visitor information displays.
Stan said it looked forward to continued engagement with Malaysia Airports and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that Sandakan Airport is well positioned to support the anticipated growth in tourist arrivals.
