Sanitation workers of the Municipal Corporation Hisar (MCH) raised slogans against administration and created a ruckus by scattering garbage on roads from tractor-trolleys when the Municipal staff was trying to lift the waste, littered on the roads for many days due to the ongoing strike by the workers.
The MC officials pressed the JCB machines to lift the garbage from the market places including Rajguru marke, Auto market, Azad Nagar and other areas on Saturday. However, the striking MC workers reached the venue and stalled the work to remove garbage to register their protest.
As the MC officials tried to lift garbage into a tractor-trolley with the help of private workers and police, striking sanitation workers reached the spot, surrounded the vehicle and raised slogans.
During the protest, some workers climbed onto the trolley and threw the entire garbage back onto the road.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Shalini Chetal and Executive Officer Amit Kaushik had led the MC staff. However, due to the protest, the MC staff had to leave the work unfinished.
Similarly, as the MC attempted to lift garbage from Azad Nagar and near the Old Court Complex, officials failed to remove the waste there as well due to protest from the striking workers.
Sanitation employees continued their protests and sit-ins at garbage collection points near ITI Chowk, Kamri Road and other areas of the town.
The sanitation workers have formed four separate teams to keep vigil at major garbage dumping points overnight in an attempt to press the government to accept their demands.
Notably, most of the roads and market places are littered with heavy garbage as the sanitation workers remained on strike for many days.
Meanwhile, Municipal Employees Union state president Naresh Shastri accused the government of adopting a “repressive policy”.
He said the employees were peacefully protesting to press for their demands, but instead of resolving the issues, the government was trying to provoke them. “We do not want any confrontation. We only want the government to fulfill our demands,” he said.
Garbage collection has remained suspended for the past nine days due to the strike by the sanitation workers.
According to information, nearly 1,890 tonnes of garbage has been lying accumulated on roads and near residential areas across the town.
Vehicles of the agency engaged in door-to-door garbage collection have also remained off the roads for the past nine days.
