SUNGAI PETANI – A meeting between the Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and Umno leaders in the state is currently being arranged to take place in the near future.

Sanusi, who is the the Jeneri State Legislative Assemblyman, confirmed that he has been informed about the matter and that it was being scheduled by his office now.

"I have already received approval from Kedah Pas to hold an initial meeting with the former chief minister from Umno, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid. I was informed that he wishes to come alongside Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah (also Kedah Menteri Besar from Umno).

"We have asked the office to arrange a suitable time. I had to seek permission from Kedah Pas first. I am not the party leader in Kedah, I am the second-in-command.

"I have my leader. Kedah Pas has agreed to this preliminary meeting," he said.

He said this when officiating the 2026 Sungai Petani Municipal Council Sepak Raga Tuju Carnival here on Saturday.

Previously, Kedah Umno expressed its intention to hold a meeting with the Menteri Besar to discuss potential cooperation between the two parties in the state.

Mahdzir, who is also the Kedah Umno liaison committee chairman, stated that the meeting would be arranged following the conclusion of the 2026 Umno General Assembly.

However, Sanusi clarified that the initial meeting is intended to gauge Umno's intentions before any further negotiations take place.

"Perhaps they want to ask about seats, right? I understand that the seat distribution remains status quo. If Umno-BN doesn't have any seats yet, we can see which seats could be explored for them to contest. I am not certain, but perhaps that is it... I am just mentioning it beforehand," he said.

Nevertheless, he simultaneously pointed out that negotiations regarding parliamentary or state seats cannot solely consider the situation in a single state, as the final decision must take into account the position across the entire country.

"At the Melaka state level, negotiations cannot be conducted solely at the Melaka state level, negotiations must take the whole nation into account," he said.

Sanusi said this was essential to allow any adjustments between states to be made based on the outcome of negotiations at the federal level.

"If discussions are limited to just one state, it will be difficult to settle. Like in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, it is hard to reach a compromise. Therefore, other states must also be taken into consideration.

"Whatever decision the central leadership makes, they will pass that decision down to the states. I will abide by that decision,

"As for now, it's just an initial stage, let's meet first. We'll see what there is to chat about. I don't have a clear picture yet. That is all," he said.
