Gagosian is set to present the first solo exhibition of Sarah Sze in Asia, opening on March 25, 2025, in Hong Kong. This marks her sixth exhibition with the renowned gallery. The show will feature a stunning collection of new large-scale mixed-media paintings alongside an innovative series of hanging sculptures.

In this new body of work, Sze delves into the overwhelming flood of images that dominate contemporary life, exploring how meaning is constructed from this constant visual stream. Drawing from her distinctive visual vocabulary—featuring motifs like a bird, a wolf, a hand, and a sunset—Sze’s latest creations blur the lines between two and three dimensions. These elements flow seamlessly across media, transitioning from painting to sculpture and back again, forming a visual call-and-response that invites reflection on themes of time, memory, and perception.

Continuing to evolve her unique approach to painting, Sze creates a recursive and generative system of image-making. Her process layers gestural brushstrokes, coloured tape, torn paper with printed images, and other materials, creating compositions that fuse the digital and analog, the tactile and the immaterial. The result is a captivating exploration of the complexities of visual perception.

One of the standout works in the exhibition, Rip Tide (2025), showcases a bird soaring over a vibrant expanse of pink, orange, and gold paint, echoing a flock of birds rising toward the painting’s upper edges. Sze’s striking compositional techniques allow imagery to appear and disappear, evolve and disintegrate, reflecting the ever-changing nature of memory itself.

This exhibition promises to offer a thought-provoking meditation on the fluid and transient nature of the images that shape our understanding of the world, highlighting Sze’s ability to make the intangible tangible through her innovative use of materials and form.

The Sarah Sze exhibition will open to the public on March 25 and will run for a limited time at Gagosian Hong Kong.
