Sarawak police mobilise 750 officers for Op Selamat 26 to monitor hotspots and ensure safety during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive period.
KUCHING: A total of 750 police officers and personnel have been mobilised for monitoring and enforcement duties across Sarawak for Op Selamat 26 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the six-day operation, running from March 19 to 24, will be conducted by the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department with a focus on major city routes identified as accident or congestion hotspots.
He stated that officers and personnel will be placed at selected locations where accidents and jams occur, while also conducting patrols to ensure premises and homes are safe from criminal threats.
The commissioner urged the public to inform the police before leaving their homes through various channels for monitoring purposes.
According to statistics, the number of road accidents during Aidilfitri last year dropped slightly to 332 cases compared to 354 cases in the same period in 2024.
Mohamad Zainal added that fatal crashes also dropped to five cases from seven the year before, which he said proved the effectiveness of enforcement and public awareness.
He noted that Kuching remained the district with the highest crash rates last year with 87 cases, followed by Miri with 50 and Padawan with 43.
