Two agencies warn of severe weather across Sarawak’s divisions as monsoon brings torrential rain and flooding
KUCHING: Two government agencies have issued red alert warnings for Sarawak as the state braces for severe weather conditions expected to persist through December 17.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department and Sarawak Drainage and Irrigation Department have both cautioned residents about incoming torrential rainfall and potential flooding across multiple divisions.
The weather warning covers nine divisions spanning the entire state: Kuching, Serian, and Sri Aman in the south; Betong, Sibu, Mukah, and Kapit in central regions; and Miri and Limbang in the north.
According to the state drainage authority, major waterways throughout these areas are anticipated to breach their banks, causing widespread flooding in surrounding communities.
Key rivers expected to experience significant swelling include Sungai Sarawak in the southern region, Sungai Rajang in central Sarawak, and Sungai Miri, Sungai Baram, and Sungai Limbang in the northern areas.
Both agencies are urging residents in flood-prone zones and riverside communities to prepare for potential evacuations and emergency situations.
The state has already endured significant flooding over the past week due to heavy monsoon rains.
Some locations recorded water levels exceeding one meter, severely disrupting road networks and highways, particularly in northern Sarawak.
Infrastructure damage has been substantial, with highway sections in the northern Niah district experiencing cracking and collapse.
Sarawak is currently experiencing the peak intensity of the monsoon season.
