Sarawak holds immense potential to emerge as one of Malaysia’s key economic drivers, particularly through its green energy initiatives, which are poised for significant growth and have the capacity to attract foreign investments, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Expressing optimism about Sarawak’s future economic development, Anwar highlighted the state’s efforts, particularly in Miri, where the development of a 500MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant is currently underway. This project has positioned Miri, and Sarawak at large, as an attractive destination for countries seeking investment opportunities in green technology.
I commend the Sarawak state government for quickly seizing this opportunity, said Anwar. With investments pouring in, Sarawak, including Miri, has become an energy hub for our region. If any country is looking for a supplier of green energy, alternative energy, or hydrogen-based energy, they now look directly at Sarawak, he stated during the Sarawakku Sayang Madani Rakyat Programme in Miri.
Anwar emphasized Sarawak’s potential to become a future economic powerhouse and reiterated his support for the state’s leadership. He praised their focus on maintaining political stability and driving forward development, recognizing these factors as crucial to Sarawak’s sustained economic growth.
Among the attendees at the event were Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof, and other federal and state cabinet ministers.
Anwar also underscored Sarawak's significance as a central player in Malaysia's energy sector. When we talk about energy, Sarawak is always mentioned as a beacon of progress. The state has proven its ability to implement successful and impactful energy projects, he added.
Shifting the discussion to broader political issues, Anwar expressed concern about certain political leaders who, in their desperation, resort to inciting division among the people. He criticized these leaders for exploiting racial and religious tensions to undermine national stability.
When they see economic growth, the strengthening of the ringgit, declining unemployment rates, rising job opportunities, and controlled inflation, their response is to stoke hatred among races and create anxiety around religious differences, Anwar remarked. He stressed the importance of setting a positive example and fostering unity among the people.
Anwar acknowledged that Malaysia still faces challenges related to race, religion, and state relations, but he believes these can be resolved through dialogue, mutual trust, and respect. He pointed out that political tensions in Peninsular Malaysia have at times reached a "boiling point," but he remains grateful that the majority of people continue to choose the path of progress and understanding.
On the subject of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), Anwar highlighted his administration's achievements in addressing the promises outlined in the agreement. Since assuming office, he noted that over 11 claims have been resolved, including the transfer of ownership of Bintulu Port to the Sarawak government. He emphasized that while some issues take time due to legislative and procedural complexities, progress is being made.
Additionally, Anwar announced that the federal government will be upgrading several health clinics in Sarawak, particularly in rural areas. Among the clinics set to benefit are the Long Bemang Health Clinic, Tudan, Suai Bridge, Mulu National Park Clinic, and Long Loyang Health Clinic.
During the event, Anwar also distributed Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) cash assistance to several recipients in Miri. He revealed that a total of 28,944 applicants in Sarawak had applied for the STR program, with funds either distributed through banks or handed out in cash for those without bank accounts.
Lastly, he extended the Sejati Madani Contribution to the communities in northern Sarawak, further demonstrating the government's commitment to supporting local development and welfare initiatives across the region.
