SARAWAK police are fully prepared to provide manpower and logistical support to their counterparts in Sabah during the 17th Sabah State Election (PRN17), should the need arise, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said today.
“As the closest contingent to Sabah, it is our responsibility to extend assistance when required, particularly during the campaigning period, which is typically challenging in terms of crowd control and public safety,” he said.
Speaking after the monthly parade at the Sarawak Police Headquarters, Mohamad Zainal confirmed that while the number of officers to be deployed has not yet been finalised, internal preparations are underway to determine available personnel without compromising Sarawak’s own security needs.
“We are waiting on developments regarding PRN17 in Sabah and will provide full support if a request comes from the contingent there,” he added.
He noted that geographical proximity and ease of transport would make Sarawak the primary source of reinforcement during the election period.
Coordination between Sarawak and Sabah police has already been enhanced to ensure that all security measures are in place throughout the electoral process.
The Sabah State Legislative Assembly was officially dissolved on 6 October, paving the way for the state election to be held within 60 days, in line with the state constitution.
The Election Commission (EC) is scheduled to convene a special meeting on 16 October to decide on key dates, including nomination day, early voting, and polling day.
IGP: 9,500 Police officers deployed
In a new development, a total of 9,500 officers and personnel from the police will be deployed to ensure public order and the smooth conduct of the upcoming Sabah state election (PRN), according to Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail.
The deployment will cover all 73 state constituencies, which will see over 3,500 polling channels opened across Sabah.
"We are factoring in the vast geography and logistical challenges of the state, which necessitate the use of helicopters to ensure personnel can be stationed effectively in remote areas," he said during a press conference following the 13th Inspector Cadet Passing-Out Parade Series 1/2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre on Friday.
Mohd Khalid confirmed that federal police headquarters Bukit Aman will provide the necessary reinforcements, noting that the Sabah contingent has requested between 1,000 to 1,500 additional officers and personnel.
He also called on all political parties, leaders and supporters to maintain decorum throughout the campaign period.
“We advise everyone, particularly political leaders and their supporters, to uphold discipline and observe proper conduct to ensure the election takes place peacefully and in an orderly manner,” he said.
Highlighting Malaysia’s multicultural harmony, Mohd Khalid urged all parties to abide by the law.
“Our country is multiracial and remains stable. Let us work together to ensure this state election is carried out smoothly, peacefully and with integrity,” he added. - October10, 2025
