Sarawak records highest air pollution reading as Serian hits very unhealthy level

SERIAN recorded a very unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 258 as of 8am today, the highest in the country, according to the Department of Environment’s (DOE) Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS).

Eight other areas in Sarawak recorded unhealthy readings — Sri Aman (196), Samarahan (196), Kuching (193), Bintulu (153), Sarikei (152), Samalaju (151), Mukah (112) and Sibu (105).

Nationwide, 45 areas recorded moderate air quality, including Kota Tinggi, Johor (80), Kuala Selangor, Selangor (75), Rompin, Pahang (73), Kemaman, Terengganu (69) and Seremban, Negri Sembilan (58).

Another 13 areas recorded good air quality, with Sungai Petani, Kedah at 46, Seberang Jaya, Penang at 45, Kota Bharu, Kelantan at 34, Kulim Hi-Tech, Kedah at 30 and Kangar, Perlis at 23.

Rainfall in several areas was among factors contributing to improved air quality, based on forecasts by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

MetMalaysia also issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds in parts of Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Melaka, Johor and Sarawak until 10am today. - September 12, 2026
