Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg revealed that Sarawak's upcoming airline will adopt a business model akin to Emirates, the renowned flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Drawing inspiration from Emirates' success in offering lower airfares compared to other airlines, Sarawak aims to use this model to transform itself into a global hub and attract tourists.
Speaking at the grand opening of the Sheraton Kuching Hotel, Abang Johari emphasized the potential of replicating Dubai's success over the past 30 years. Dubai, through Emirates, has become a major hub in the Middle East. Sarawak hopes to emulate this success by providing affordable airfares, opening its doors to the world and stimulating economic activities within the state.
Abang Johari highlighted the unique approach Sarawak intends to take in running its airline, particularly with the expected finalization of the state's acquisition of MASwings by the third quarter of the year. He clarified that the airline's business model would deviate from the traditional return on investment (ROI) calculation associated with typical projects. Instead, the focus would be on the airline serving as a 'bridge' to connect Sarawak to other countries.
Comparing the airline to the Batang Lupar Bridge, which cost around RM1 billion and was constructed to facilitate mobility, Abang Johari emphasized the importance of measuring success through the spin-off effects and economic impact rather than a conventional ROI.
Expressing optimism, the Premier hoped that airfares would stabilize once Sarawak operates its airline, providing relief to travelers during festive seasons. He noted that the state would strategically calculate potential airfares to prevent arbitrary increases by other carriers.
The event, attended by dignitaries including Abang Johari's wife, Deputy Premiers, ministers, and Sheraton Kuching Hotel owner Tan Sri Yee Ming Seng, highlighted the collective commitment to enhancing Sarawak's connectivity and tourism sector. The proposed airline is seen as a strategic move to not only boost tourism but also to assert greater control over air travel dynamics in the region. As Sarawak charts its course in the aviation industry, it aims to carve a niche similar to the success story of Emirates in transforming Dubai into a global aviation hub.
