GLASGOW, July 25 — Two-time Paralympic champion Bonnie Bunyau Gustin had to settle for a bronze medal in the men’s lightweight category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, losing to England’s Mark Swan at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo here, yesterday.
Bonnie could only record a best lift of 220 kilogrammes (kg) for 153.5 points against Swan’s 222 kg effort worth 153.9 points and Roland Ezuruike of Nigeria’s best lift of 185kg for 153.9 points.
Bonnie had earlier failed in his final attempt to lift 230 kg.
The result means that the 27-year-old four-time world champion from Sarawak failed to defend the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold he won in Birmingham, where he set a Games record of 154.6 points with a 220kg lift.
Malaysia has set a target of five gold, two silver and four bronze medals across eight of the 10 sports contested, including six integrated para sports for the Games.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games, which officially opened yesterday, will run until Aug 2. — Bernama
