Leaders of the BJP and the Congress are campaigning for their party-supported candidates in the elections to panchayati raj institutions and local urban bodies in Una district. With just a few days left for voting, both parties are putting in their best efforts to wrest majority in the five urban bodies of Una district (Santoshgarh, Mehatpur Basdehra, Gagret, Amb, and Tahliwal). Elections to the Una Municipal Corporation and Bangana Nagar Panchayat will be held in the next phase. Incumbent MLA Satpal Singh Satti and former Congress MLA Satpal Raizada canvassed for their candidates in Una while Congress MLA Vivek Sharma and former BJP MLAs Virender Kanwar and Davinder Bhutto campaigned in support of their candidates in Kutlehar.
In Chintpurni and Gagret, the BJP and the Congress were also in the full election mode. For the panchayati raj elections, the two parties are focusing on winning the maximum number of Zila Parishad seats, besides securing a majority in five panchayat samitis.
However, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri has been conspicuous by his absence in his native Haroli Assembly segment for the past many days and is touring other parts of the state. Meanwhile, the Una Election Department on Wednesday conducted the first round of rehearsal for polling to the panchayat raj institutions. Training sessions were conducted at various subdivisions under the chairmanship of the five SDMs. The second round of rehearsals would be held on May 18 and the last session would be on May 24. The voting would be held in three phases on May 26, 28 and 30 from 7 am to 3 pm.
