SBAT Phase III project on track for completion by late next year

TAWAU: Construction of the RM450 million Phase III Tawau Water Supply Scheme (SBAT III), which includes the design and construction of the Tawau Water Dam, is progressing according to schedule and is expected to be completed before the end of next year.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor expressed satisfaction with the progress report from the Sabah State Water Department (JANS), stating that he hopes the water supply issues in Tawau district and surrounding areas will be resolved upon the project's completion.

Speaking during an inspection and briefing session at the project site near the Cinta Mata II Water Treatment Plant on Sunday, Hajiji noted that consultants and JANS officers confirmed contractor performance has been good.

Hajiji reiterated the state government's commitment to delivering the infrastructure despite past delays to the project, which was originally launched on Dec 18, 2017, and scheduled for completion on Dec 17, 2021.

Responding to queries on whether the state government would allocate additional funds if the contractor applies for an extension, Hajiji stated that any decision would depend on evaluation reports from JANS and the Sabah Department of Irrigation and Drainage.
