Scammers use photo of deceased woman to collect 'donations' for cancer treatment

A WOMAN was shocked when a picture of her late cousin was used on a social media site supposedly to garner sympathy from the public and collect donations.

Lynn Tan, 40, said that during her lifetime, her late cousin suffered from cancer and passed away in December last year.

According to her, the social media site allegedly deceived the public into collecting funds totaling RM80,000 for cancer treatment.

"The Facebook page claimed that the victim needs treatment costing RM80,000 and asked for public sympathy, even though the woman in the picture had passed away.

"I tried to disguise myself and contact the parties involved and asked how much money was still needed. They told me it was around RM30,000. I believe they have so far collected around RM50,000 from the scam," she said as reported by Sinar Harian.

According to her, family members regretted that the photo had been misused by certain parties and considered it a serious offence.

"Our family is very sorry that this picture has been misused for fraudulent purposes.

"The purpose of the disclosure is to prevent more people from being deceived and becoming victims of fraud," she said.

At the same time, information and evidence are being collected before a police report is made.

"We also remind the public to be vigilant and not easily believe in dubious fundraising efforts on social media, in addition to referring to the appropriate parties to identify the authenticity first," she said. - September 17, 2025
