THE Department of Energy (DOE) has extended the schedule and increased the capacity being offered under a special waste-to-energy round under the Green Energy Auction Program.
From 230 megawatts (MW), the installation target is now 400 MW for thermal combustion waste-to-energy projects. The mechanical completion and commencement timelines were extended to December 2028 and December 2029, respectively. This is to accommodate project development, enhance investor confidence and to ensure that participants can deliver financially viable and technically sound projects.Interested participants have also been given more time to comply with auction requirements, with the registration period extended to July 31.Companies that secure waste-to-energy or biomass energy operating contracts on or before the end of July will still be eligible to join the auction. The DOE said it would amend Department Circular DC 2026-04-00111 and the terms of reference to reflect the revised capacity, extended timelines and other adjustments to the auction parameters.
