Three Scottish football icons have thrown their support behind Mexico in a tongue-in-cheek Paddy Power advertisement released before England's World Cup knockout stage encounter.

Graeme Souness, Charlie Nicholas and Gordon Strachan appear in the footage, donning Mexican-themed attire, expressing their newfound allegiance to El Tri ahead of Monday's last-16 fixture.

The match takes place at the iconic Azteca Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 1am.

Scotland's early departure from the tournament following their group stage elimination appears to have fuelled the trio's enthusiasm for seeing the Three Lions' campaign brought to an abrupt conclusion by the co-hosts.

The advertisement opens with Souness wielding a golf club to smash a Mexican piñata shaped like the number 66, a pointed reference to England's sole World Cup victory.

Souness said: "We Mexico fans are laid back, but we still have a ferocious will to win.

"Something our next opponents are going to experience first hand, whoever that may be."

Nicholas then appears in a Mexican wrestling costume, adopting an accent while praising the national side's qualities.

The former striker said: "Being a Los Azteca is all about passion; we may not always win, but we will fight to the end.

"The atmosphere, the intensity, the altitude, I'm telling you, we are a match for anyone on our own patch."

The ex-Arsenal man is then shown eating a baked bean sandwich before saying: "I bloody love tacos."

Strachan makes his entrance dressed as a mariachi band member, complete with sombrero, claiming to have joined his first mariachi group at 69, which happens to be his current age.

The former Scotland manager then launches into a rendition of "Oh Flower of Mexico," a twist on Scotland's unofficial anthem.

The trio's commitment to their newfound Mexican identity extends to their choice of drink, with Souness and Nicholas seen sipping yerba mate, which is typically drunk in South America rather than Mexico.

Nicholas insists his backing for Mexico has nothing to do with their opponents, while Souness maintains he has no idea who El Tri face next.

The advertisement concludes with all three declaring "Vamos Mexico".

England face a tough task ahead of them at 1am, with Mexico only losing twice at the high-altitude Azteca Stadium.

Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged his squad enters the fixture at a disadvantage, having had insufficient time to acclimatise to Mexico City's high-altitude conditions.

Should the Three Lions overcome these obstacles and secure victory, they would advance to the quarter-finals, where either Brazil or Norway await.
