Scottie Scheffler suffers Scottish Open setback as remarkable streak ends

  • World number one Scottie Scheffler missed the cut at the Scottish Open, ending his remarkable streak of 78 consecutive made cuts, his first in four years.
  • Scheffler's early departure came after he failed to convert a six-foot putt for par on his final hole, the par-three ninth, leaving him at level par for the tournament following a two-over round of 72.
  • While the missed cut provides Scheffler an opportunity to scout Royal Birkdale, a course new to him, he stated it was “a little different to what I was planning” and not ideal preparation for his upcoming Claret Jug defence.
  • Elsewhere in the tournament, Jordan Smith delivered an impressive round of 63, featuring four successive birdies, to reach nine under par, one shot ahead of fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick.
  • Matt Fitzpatrick also produced a superb 65, including five successive birdies, to sit at eight under par, while Jon Rahm made a significant recovery with a second-round 65 to make the cut.
