MANILA, Philippines — Barangay Ginebra star Scottie Thompson battled through a hamstring injury and went on to capture the Ramon Fernandez Finals MVP award after leading the Gin Kings to the PBA Season 50 Commissioner's Cup title on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
The do-it-all playmaker finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists as he helped Ginebra subdue TNT, 88-76 in Game 7 en route to winning their championship series, 4-3 in front of a new MOA Arena record 24,617 fans.
The championship marked Ginebra’s first since ruling the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup crown after beating foreign squad Bay Area Dragons in a seven-game title series as well.
The long-time Ginebra superstar averaged 10.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists in the epic seven-game series.
“This one is the hardest championship we won,” Thompson said in Filipino, as he captured his eighth PBA title. “Kudos to TNT. Thankful to God for this championship.” The 32-year-old guard out of Perpetual Help won his third PBA Finals MVP.
