The USMNT have eyes on further World Cup progress following their loss to Turkey on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were already through as winners of Group D following victories over Paraguay and Australia, so the result did not make a difference to their overall campaign despite the late disappointment.

The United States will now play Bosnia and Herzegovina in San Francisco on Thursday as both teams eye a spot in the last 16. The furthest the USMNT have ever got in the World Cup is when they finished third in the inaugural edition back in 1930.

They have not reached the World Cup quarter-finals since 2002 but one particular record fell during their game with Turkey.

Berhalter scores and assists in the same World Cup match

Indeed, Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Berhalter became the first player for the US to score and assist in the same World Cup game since records began back in 1966.

The 25-year-old, son of former USMNT coach Gregg, delivered the corner from which Celtic defender Aaron Trusty scored his first international goal.

Turkey quickly pulled one back through Real Madrid star Arda Guler before taking the lead through Kenan Yildiz.

Berhalter, however, would respond by unleashing a piledriver from just outside the box after Turkey failed to clear a throw-in in the 49 minute.

It was another reasonably impressive performance from Pochettino’s side, although the fact that Kaan Ayhan scored a late winner was clearly a relative disappointment.

Still, not many will be thinking back to this game if the USMNT continue to make World Cup progress. Berhalter certainly wrote his name into the record books and there is a palpable feeling of excitement about how far this team can go under the former Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham manager.
