
The women’s team of Sri Guru Gobind Singh (SGGS) Hockey Club, Sector 26, and the men’s team of Wanderers Club won respective titles in the Chandigarh State Championships at the Sector 42 Sports Complex.
In the women’s final, the Sector 26 team edged past Chandigarh Hockey Academy, Sector 18, with a 4-3 verdict. It was the Sector 18 team, which drew the first blood in the opening minute through Ratanajeet Chauhan, but the goal was cancelled by Palak in the 6th minute for the Sector 26 team.
Palak again helped the side, as she converted a penalty corner in the 20th minute to make it 2-1 for the Sector 26 team. In the 21st minute, Ratanajeet scored her second goal to help the Sector 18 team to level the score. In the third quarter, the Sector 26 team got a major boost with Palak again scoring through a penalty corner, while Dhapa Devi extended the lead to 4-2 through a field goal in the 49th minute. With little time left, Simran scored for the Sector 18 team through a penalty corner in the 58th minute.
Two-time Olympian Gurjant shines
Playing for Wanderers Club, two-time Olympian Gurjant Singh proved to be an asset, as the side defeated ITBP 5-2. The club team scored the opener in the 20th minute, as Harpanthpreet Singh scored through penalty corner. The lead was cancelled in the 31st minute by ITBP skipper Rohit. However, the club team came up with three consecutive goals. Club team skipper Rohit converted a penalty corner in the 36th minute, followed by another goal in the 48th minute. Dilraj Singh netted one in the 47th minute to seal a good lead. In the dying minutes, ITBP scored their second goal through left-striker.
AG Haryana team claimed the third position by recording a 7-1 win over SGGS Club. Sunil Shah starred in the team’s win by scoring three goals (in 10th, 26th, 29th minute), while Yadwinder Singh (13th), Gobind Patel (15th), Yadwinder Singh (20th) and Sarvjeet Singh (52nd minute) also scored for the side.
The only goal for the Sector 26 club team came from Rishav in the 32nd minute. Haryana Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh awarded the winners and runners-up and congratulated Hockey Chandigarh president Karan Gilhotra for conducting the meet.
