KOTA KINABALU: Shop lot owners in Segama Complex have been directed to conduct structural integrity tests following a floor collapse incident on Friday (March 7).
Kota Kinabalu MP cum Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin said he had requested the City Hall (DBKK) to issue notices to the owners, as the buildings, constructed in the 1970s, may have structural weaknesses.
City Hall Director-General Lifred Wong said that DBKK has the legal authority to mandate such tests, especially for ageing buildings, and has issued notices since last year.
The incident saw a woman sustain serious injuries after being struck by concrete debris from the collapsed first floor, which also served as the ceiling of a restaurant.
Authorities believe the collapse, which left a large hole in the structure, was due to the building's age and a weakened floor, prompting urgent safety measures.
