Selangor hasn’t gotten federal SUKMA funds, says exco

SHAH ALAM, April 21 - Selangor hasn’t received allocations from the federal government to host the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) 2026, said state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He added that the state is negotiating funding with the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) to stage the biennial event.

“Selangor still hasn’t received any allocation from the federal government.

“We are working (on it) and negotiating with KBS to get funding aid,” he told reporters at Wisma DNS here today.

According to him, SUKMA host states usually receive funding from the central government, but the move hasn’t been decided for Selangor.

“In previous SUKMAs, host states like Sarawak, Perlis and Perak would usually receive allocations.

“But for Selangor, we haven’t gotten any so far,” Najwan said.

He added that if the funds are approved, it would help the state government to realign costs and provide clearer explanations at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting.

Najwan also said debate results and assemblymen’s views will be tabled at a SUKMA Supreme Committee meeting with KBS.

“After the assembly sitting, we will bring all views to the Supreme Committee meeting for joint discussion.

“The decision to continue, postpone or adjust (SUKMA 2026) will be reached by consensus,” he said.

“Preparations are going on as usual because there’s no decision yet. We have asked the Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) to continue athlete training and preparations as planned.

“Whatever the decision later, training and preparations must continue to ensure readiness isn’t affected,” Najwan added.

Yesterday, in a Royal address at the First Meeting of the Fourth Term of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj suggested SUKMA 2026 be postponed until the West Asia conflict is resolved.
