Selangor Speaker to decide fate of assemblyman amid alleged bankruptcy

THE fate of a Selangor state assemblyman reportedly facing disqualification over alleged bankruptcy is expected to become clearer this week, as the State Legislative Assembly prepares to announce its determination on the matter.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the process falls entirely under the jurisdiction of Speaker Lau Weng San, who will decide whether the assemblyman has lost his eligibility before any formal notification is submitted to the Election Commission (EC).

He emphasised that the matter is not within the authority of the state government but is a constitutional responsibility vested in the Speaker.

"That is subject to the Speaker's prerogative, not my position.

"But I think the State Legislative Assembly will prepare the necessary note and, at the latest, within this week we will inform the public of the status of the assemblyman concerned," he told reporters after attending the Selangor Civil Service Assembly and the launch of the 2026 Fly the Jalur Gemilang Campaign on Monday.

Amirudin was responding to questions over reports that a Selangor assemblyman had forfeited his position after allegedly being declared bankrupt.

The identity of the assemblyman concerned has not been officially disclosed, and no authority has publicly confirmed either the alleged bankruptcy order or whether it has resulted in the loss of his seat.

Should the Speaker determine that the assemblyman is no longer qualified to serve, the matter is expected to be formally communicated to the EC, which will decide the next course of action in accordance with the law. - August 3, 2026
