Selangor SUKMA contingent ends day with slew of silver

SHAH ALAM, Aug 17 - The third day of the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) saw the Selangor contingent haul silver medals in several key events including water polo and bowling.

At 10.30pm today, Selangor, as hosts, are at the top of the leaderboard again with 14 gold, 15 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Earlier, the state women’s water polo team scored silver after a thrilling final match against Sarawak, where they were beaten 10-12.

The tournament at Selangor Aquatic here saw Sarah Ann Thorp’s girls struggle to maintain their early lead in the first two quarters, with Sarawak ultimately turning the tide.

At the same location, Selangor’s men’s water polo squad earned silver, too, with a 6-9 loss in their intense final against Sarawak.

Ko Hyang Kwuaon’s boys got a bright start with a 2-1 lead in the opening quarter, but Sarawak responded strongly in the second quarter, turning the game around to lead 3-2 before extending its advantage to 5-4 in the third quarter.

In Subang at Sunway Megalanes, Selangor kegler Adania Mohd Redzwan made her mark with a silver medal in women’s singles tenpin bowling.

Having competed across six games, her slow start saw her trail behind earlier in the competition, but she gained ground to finish with 1,306 pinfalls, 38 pins behind Perlis champion Nurul Aisyah Salleh.

In preliminary team events, the Selangor sepak takraw squad beat Sarawak in their Group B match 3-0 across three regu at Arena MBSJ Puchong today.

Selangor next faces Sabah in Group B preliminaries.

It was silver at the National Shooting Range in Subang, too, when Thaqif Norhaqeem Rozhan earned second place in the men’s individual 50m pistol event.

On the track in UPM Stadium, Muhammad Daniel Haqiem earned silver in the men’s 400m race with a record of 47.61s.

The Selangor contingent added another bronze to its athletics medal haul when the 4x100m men’s quartet earned third place at UPM Stadium here today.

Ahmad Sufi Mohd Faiesal, Danish Irfan Thamrin, Muhammad Aryan Syahmi and Muhammad Danysh Ashraff logged a time of 40.29s, their tournament best, to finish behind Johor and Sabah.

Meanwhile, long-distance runners at UPM Stadium in Serdang today suffered dehydration and heat stroke during the 4pm race in 33ºC heat.

The 3,000m hurdles were held in the afternoon heat despite team officials’ objections to the schedule, and contingent members are hoping future races are scheduled at more appropriate times.
