Selangor’s state assembly will debate the Sultan’s proposal to postpone the 2026 Malaysia Games, with a final decision pending discussions among assemblymen
THE Selangor state government will consider proposals from all assemblymen regarding the potential postponement of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
This follows a view expressed by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, to delay the biennial event.
State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Exco Mohd Najwan Halimi expressed gratitude for the Sultan’s address during the assembly opening.
He stated that the government will examine the need to either postpone or proceed after hearing from assemblymen.
“Let’s not misunderstand, in the address (it is) the view and the appropriateness of whether to continue (the organisation of SUKMA) or postpone,” he told reporters.
Najwan, who chairs the SUKMA 2026 implementing committee, emphasised that any postponement must be viewed comprehensively.
He noted that SUKMA is a national-level event decided jointly with other states and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The Sultan’s decree, however, should serve as a guide for any final decision made by the state.
Sultan Sharafuddin believes the games should be postponed until the crisis in West Asia is over.
He also stated that a delay is appropriate until the reconstruction of Shah Alam Stadium is fully completed.
SUKMA Selangor 2026 is currently scheduled for August 15 to 24. Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari had previously said the games would be held on a smaller scale to save costs without reducing sports events.
This move was in response to the global energy crisis and its economic impact.
The state assembly session will now be the forum for initial discussions on the matter.
