Over the past three years, Selangor has recorded the highest number of sexual crimes in Malaysia, with 90 percent of the perpetrators being locals. The principal assistant director of Bukit Aman’s Sexual, Women, and Child Investigation Division (D11), SAC Siti Kamisah Hasan, attributes this alarming trend to various factors, including population density, economic activities, living pressures, and widespread internet access.

Selangor, a developed state surrounded by Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, and Perak, attracts residents from neighbouring regions, which contributes to its crime rate. "Selangor's developed status, combined with extensive internet access, a high number of universities, and even prisons, sees numerous sexual crimes being reported here," Siti Kamisah explained during a town hall meeting at the Selangor Contingent Police Headquarters. This event was also attended by State police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan.

Following Selangor, Johor also reports high sexual crime rates, attributed to similar factors, particularly its significant population. However, Siti Kamsiah did not provide specific statistics or the exact number of cases recorded in Selangor.

Siti Kamisah highlighted that 90 percent of sexual crime perpetrators were locals and often known to the victims. These perpetrators include family members, friends, and individuals in positions of trust, such as teachers. "Statistics indicate that most sexual crime cases involve individuals from the B40 economic category, driven by economic pressures and unsuitable home environments," she noted.

Addressing the high rate of sexual crimes, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan pointed out that the sheer number of cases might not fully reflect the crime rate, considering Selangor's population exceeds seven million and the controlled crime situation. Nevertheless, the police are taking the issue seriously. Preventive measures have been intensified, including increased patrols by the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) and Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB).

In addition to these measures, the police are collaborating with local authorities to enhance surveillance. "We are working to install CCTV cameras in strategic locations, including Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, and Klang," Hussein added. These efforts aim to bolster crime prevention and enhance public safety in Selangor.

The ongoing focus on addressing sexual crimes reflects the commitment of law enforcement agencies to mitigate this serious issue and ensure a safer environment for all residents. The comprehensive strategy involves community engagement, technological enhancements, and increased policing efforts to curb the incidence of sexual crimes in the state.
