Selena Gomez says nicotine vaping habit has permanently changed her voice

Selena Gomez has urged people not to take up vaping, saying the habit changed her voice.

The 34-year-old singer and actress has quit nicotine vapes and encouraged others to follow her lead.

In a clip posted to her Instagram Stories, Gomez said: “I’m not going to be able to change my voice. I vaped nicotine a lot.”

Gomez added: “Nicotine is so hard to quit. I think I just wanted to say if you’re going through it or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it. It’s so stupid and it’s changed my voice.

“If you guys don’t like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable, I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it.”

She said: “I am really excited because I stopped and I just hope I can keep it up. “It’s really hard but I know if you’re going through something, you can get through it too. It sucks.”

Gomez has found staying away from nicotine difficult but encouraged others trying to quit to keep going.

The NHS notes that nicotine vapes should only be used to help people stop smoking and that they are less harmful than smoking.

Between 2012 and 2014, Gomez was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune condition that causes joint pain, skin rashes and tiredness. Lupus is relatively rare and 90 per cent of cases have been diagnosed in women, according to the NHS.

Most people diagnosed with lupus will have a near-normal life expectancy, but some are still at risk of life-threatening complications caused by the damage to organs, such as a stroke.

Gomez began her career as a child actress on Barney & Friends. She later found wider fame on the Disney series Wizards of Waverly Place, which ran from 2007 to 2012.

Her most recent film role was in Emilia Perez (2024), playing Jessica Del Monte. Her music career began in the 2000s, and she has released three albums with her band, Selena Gomez & The Scene, as well as three solo albums. She married music producer Benny Blanco in September 2025.
