Kota Kinabalu: A 34-year-old man who sold 25 rolls of stolen rubber mats to a shop was fined RM2,500 or nine months jail on Friday.
Chang Khai Vun pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to disposing of the stolen flooring equipment worth RM3,125 belonging to Kilang Hup Li Trading Sdn Bhd.
Chang committed the offence at 7.30pm on Aug 4 at Bismillah Megat Stor, Kg Likas, Jalan Haiwan.
He was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine, or both, on conviction.
Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuting, told the court that Chang, who was arrested by police on Aug 6, confessed to have sold the stolen mats to a shop in Likas. Chang requested for a lenient sentence.
In another case, a 26-year-old Filipino was sentenced to six months’ jail for having a stolen smartphone.
Samsahi Saimudin admitted to keeping a stolen iPhone Xs Max belonging to one Yong Chun Keat at 12.54am on July 26 at a jetty, Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen here.
The offence, framed under Section 411 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to five years or fine, or both, on conviction.
The court heard from the prosecution that the smartphone was reported missing on Feb 28 this year.
Samsahi was arrested by police on July 26 and that the stolen smartphone was found on him.
Samsahi confessed to have bought the stolen gadget from unknown man for RM150, the court heard.
The prosecution also informed that the complainant identified the smartphone as the one reported stolen.
An inspection to the phone found that it was still locked and could only be unlocked using the original password, the court heard.
The court ordered Samsahi to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and for him to be referred to Immigration Department thereafter.
