MANILA, Philippines — The Senate expects Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte to appear before the impeachment court beginning Monday after the subpoena issued to him took effect, Senate Sergeant-at-Arms retired Gen. Alfred Corpuz said.
Corpuz said the subpoena requires Duterte to appear from Sept. 28 to 30 in connection with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
“He should be here today until the 30th,” Corpuz told reporters when asked when the mayor was expected to arrive.
As of Monday morning, however, there had been no confirmation of Mayor Duterte’s arrival or coordination with the Senate, Corpuz said.
“We are trying to get in touch with their security so that we can arrange a security arrangement for them,” he said.
Corpuz said Baste would be accommodated in the Laurel Room, where impeachment witnesses are held.
He said the Senate would provide Mayor Duterte with the same security arrangements and protocols extended to other Senate guests and impeachment witnesses.
“There are no security threats,” Corpuz said.
Baste was ordered to bring Davao City government records involving GenCorp Industries Inc. and corporations operating Jollibee branches from 2020 to the present.
GenCorp was among the companies declared by Vice President Duterte as a business interest in her 2024 and 2025 Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.
The House prosecution panel has said it may ask the impeachment court to declare Baste Duterte a hostile witness if he does not cooperate.
