A Russian general was killed Monday morning after an explosive device detonated beneath his car in Moscow, authorities said.

Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Trainin Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, died from his injuries, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.

The blast damaged several nearby parked vehicles, as forensic teams examined the damaged car and surrounding area.

The killing follows two similar attacks over the past year targeting senior Russian military officers near their residences.
