Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens says his approach to the position is more influenced by Manuel Neuer than by Thibaut Courtois, despite the latter’s impact on him.

Lammens, who plays alongside Courtois for Belgium, has often spoken about how much he respects the 33-year-old. Even so, it’s another big name who shaped his style early on.

“Since I was a young player it was always Neuer who influenced me,” Lammens said. “I really liked his style of play and especially because he was a very modern goalkeeper. And yeah, I also like to take risks and play more out of his box.”

The 27-year-old even came close to joining Manchester United back in 2011 before David De Gea eventually moved to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid. Now, many feel Lammens’ style could bring echoes of that era back to United.

Senne Lammens made his senior debut for Belgium in 2025 and the 23-year-old Belgian shot-stopper has made one appearance for the national team so far.

It’s been a promising first year at Old Trafford for the young goalkeeper, who has featured 22 times across all competitions for United.

Lammens, who earned his first cap in Belgium’s 7-0 win over Liechtenstein last November, spoke about how much Courtois meant to him as an aspiring player. “Thibaut Courtois was always a big thing when I was growing up because his saving is just world class,” he said, as per The Guardian.

Senne Lammens reveals his Bayern Munich idol as he settles into life at Man Utd

Senne Lammens has recorded five clean sheets in the Premier League this season, adding stability to the Man Utd backline since joining the club.

Unlike predecessors Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, Lammens has brought a calmer presence to United’s defence, helping to steady things at the back.

Describing himself as an “all-around goalkeeper”, Lammens believes his style of play reflects what Manuel Neuer was known for during his career.

“When I was growing up my biggest idol was probably Neuer,” he explained. “I take pride in being an all-around goalkeeper and that’s why I was such a big fan because he didn’t really have a weak point, so that’s something I want to take from him.

“But I try to learn something from everyone because everyone has strong points.”

Lammens joined Old Trafford on deadline day last September during Ruben Amorim’s time in charge, with United paying Royal Antwerp an initial fee of £18.1m for his services.
