Serbia’s Nina Cajic urges young girls to play brave, stay relentless

MANILA, Philippines — Nina Cajic is using Serbia’s campaign in the Volleyball Nations League not just to compete, but to inspire the next generation to play with courage and determination.

Backed by a lively Filipino crowd at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City, Cajic and the Serbian women’s volleyball team finally snapped a string of heartbreaking five-set losses, dominating the Dominican Republic in straight sets, 25-19, 25-23, 25-15, on Friday, June 19.

Cajic delivered a solid performance with 13 points, emerging as the team’s second-leading scorer behind Anja Zubic, who finished with 16.

But beyond the numbers, the 24-year-old emphasized a deeper mission—sending a powerful message to young girls watching from the stands and beyond.

“I think we’re just trying to play as bravely as possible and to show all the girls that are watching that it’s possible to win at this stage,” Cajic said. “No matter the height, no matter anything—if you work on it, you can achieve what you want. Being relentless and playing brave is what we’re trying to be.”

Serbia remains one of the most decorated programs in women’s volleyball, having won back-to-back World Championship titles in 2018 and 2022, along with a bronze medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. However, recent years have seen the team fall short of the podium in major competitions, including struggles in the VNL.

Cajic acknowledged the challenges, pointing to a transition phase within the national team as a new generation steps in.

“Serbian volleyball, especially women’s, has been so big for so many years. I think there’s a switch of generations happening right now,” she said. “We’re just trying to bring back the name that Serbia had before. We love our fans and thank you for following us wherever you are.”

A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Cajic continues to embrace her role both as a competitor and a role model. Her efforts, along with the team’s breakthrough win, signal a step forward as Serbia looks to regain its dominance.

With renewed confidence and a message rooted in resilience, Cajic hopes their journey will encourage young athletes everywhere to chase their dreams—fearlessly.
