Serbian elections winner 'clearly seek better relations' with the EU, says expert

Marko Prelec, analyst at the International Crisis Group, believes dismantling outgoing prime minister Aleksandar Vučić's system will take a long time, but thinks it's "premature" to worry about the Students List movement's capacity to lead the country.

After 14 years in power, Vučić was defeated in the polls by a movement with "no single leader" and "no charismatic figure", with no clear name designated to be elected prime minister. Prelec insists the Students List won the elections "purely on the strength of their promise to turn the page" on Vučić, rather than a coherent platform.

According to Prelec, the movement has been "ambivalent" over an eventual Serbian membership in the European Union. But they "clearly seek better relations" with the EU.

Prelec worked with the International Tribunal in the Hague to assist prosecution of war crimes in former Yugoslavia.
